Brown Owl's History of 1st Speldhurst Brownies
The first unit to be registered was back in 1926 on the 8th July.In 1932, Brown Owl was a lady called Sheila Codd who was involved with the Guiding Association all her life. In those days the Brownies were always putting on entertainments which I think were a big success in the village.
Every year they provided entertainment for the villagers - ranging from Cinderella to Alice in Wonderland and many more.
They were very much involved in the 2nd World war and assisted in the evacuees.
Speldhurst Brownies was disbanded in April 1968 and at present I don't know why.
It was re-registered in June of 1984 with a Miss J Motts of Roopers, Speldhurst and Miss Emma Ridge took over in January of 1987 with Carole Arrowsmith as her Assistant.
I met Emma in 1988 and she asked for me to go and test for Cooks badge (as I worked in Catering). In January 1989 Carole decided that she wanted to concentrate on Guides and so I was asked to become the Assistant Brownie Guider. Emma then had work commitments so I took over from 1990.
In 1989 we joined in on a Brownie day at Chessington which a good time was had by all.
Over the years we have done many trips and Pack Holidays my first being to Smarden in 1990
Over the years we have raised lots of money for other charities and in 1993 we knitted a blanket for the Save the Children's 75th Birthday appeal. None of the Brownies could knit so we had to teach them all and they knitted a huge blanket.
Last year we raised a massive £500 for Children with Leukaemia.
I would lose count how many Brownies I have enrolled over the years. Quite a few!
And the history goes on .
